Qarter Bound Leather Boards. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Victorian Shagrin effect purple cloth boards with maroon morocco leather quarter binding, 245 x 160 mm approx. Marbled end papers, two colour head and tail bands, top edge gilt. xii + 176pp in original Blue paper covers with the slightly different but more apposite title The City Solicitor's "Painful Story" and other papers which suggest the need of reform in the Corporation of the City of London, and the necessity that has arisen for Mr Cross's long promised bill for the Suppression of Bribery. An interesting and now scarce item appertaining to the endemic bribery in high office in London prevalent in the nineteenth century which the evidence suggests was attributed to the failure to increase the remuneration of the officials but a close reading may deduce otherwise. The copy offered by us has the bookplate of Sir William Purdie Treloar, Bart, Lord Mayor 1906-7 to the front paste down. VG ( The book has recently been re backed with new mull retaining the original end papers and the spine re- laid onto replacement matching leather, the boards being detached when the book was bought in by us. Later previous owner book plate to front free end paper. Black ink splashes/ marking to title page. No other notable defects). Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale.
