Inscribed in black ink by Ashton Stevens to Gene Fowler, a New Year message: "Love, Literature and a Happy New Year to the great Gene Fowler, here in our tenement on Jan. 1, 1949, from Flo-Flo and the 1/2 dramatist, Ashton Stevens." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. A comedic sketch about a husband and wife, Farquar and Agatha Winterbottom, who face dire circumstances when they are attacked by hostile natives. Ashton Stevens (1872-1951) was an American drama critic who was well-acquainted with many famous playwrights and stage performers. Gene Markey (1895-1980) was an American author, producer, and screenwriter who was familiar with the Hollywood scene. Vincent Starrett (1886-1974) was an American writer, journalist, and bibliophile. Two program booklets including: [40p] 9.25x12.5 inch souvenir booklet illustrated with color plates by Bel Geddes of the costumes and sets including a full-color center-spread of the set design, b&w photos of participants, a synopsis by the author, essays and biographies, covers detached but present, covers rubbed and edgeworn with much wear to the spine-fold, stapled text-block pages are very good with bright plates. The Civic program is 20p. including covers, 6x9 inches on plain cream stock, production and local staff information as well as local ads, booklet in stapled wraps. With a company of 600 and designs by Norman Bel Geddes this production was scheduled for a four city tour with a company of 600. A musical pageant about a cathedral near a nunnery where the image of the Madonna performs cures and miracles, based upon Vollmoeller's novel "The Last Miracle".
