Hardback. Condition: New. The contributions comprising this volume highlight the continuous need of carrying out further research on major earthquakes and associated effects such as tsunamis. The problems arising from such catastrophic events intensify as population pressure results in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability. A better understanding of these phenomena and their consequences is required for designing earthquake resistant structures as well as carrying out risk assessments and vulnerability studies. The challenge of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings. The latter include the types of highly specialized retrofitting employed to protect the built heritage. The papers comprising this volume were presented at the 14th International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures and cover fundamental and applied research addressing a range of issues among those mentioned above.…

Hardback. Condition: New. The future of energy production, operation and management in a changing world was the focus of the 5th International Conference on Energy Production and Management. Papers presented at the meeting form this volume.A focus is placed on the comparison of conventional energy sources, particularly hydrocarbons, with a number of other ways of producing energy, emphasising new technological developments, based on renewable resources such as solar, hydro, wind and geothermal.Key to sustainability is the need to convert new sustainable sources of energy into useful forms (electricity, heat, fuel), while finding efficient ways of storage and distribution. In many cases, the challenges lie as much with the production of such renewable energy at an acceptable cost, including damage to the environment, as with the integration of those resources into the existing infrastructure. The changes required to progress from an economy based mainly on hydrocarbons to one taking advantage of sustainable energy resources are massive and require considerable scientific research as well as the development of advanced engineering systems. Such progress demands close collaboration between different disciplines in order to arrive at optimum solutions. Also discussed is the energy use of industrial processes, including the embedded energy contents of materials, such as those in the built environment. Energy production, operation, distribution and usage, result in environmental risks that need to be better understood. They are part of energy economics and relate to human environmental health as well as ecosystems behaviour. An emphasis is placed on the ways in which more efficient use can be made of conventional as well as new energy sources. This relates to savings in energy consumption, reduction of energy losses, as well as the implementation of smart devices and the design of intelligent distribution networks.…

Hardback. Condition: New. Theoretical advances and new foundations are reported which contribute to expanding the range of applications as well as the type of materials modelled in response to current industrial and professional requirements.  The contents of the volume reflect the ability of the subject matter to evolve and the establishment of a continuously renewed community of stakeholders. As design, analysis and manufacture become more integrated, the chances are that the users of computational software will be less aware of the capabilities of the analytical techniques that are at the core of the process.  This reinforces the need to retain expertise in certain specialised areas of numerical methods, such as BEM/MRM, to ensure that all new tools perform satisfactorily in the integrated process. The maturity of BEM since 1978 has resulted in a substantial number of industrial applications which demonstrate the accuracy, robustness and easy use of the technique.  Their range is still being widened, taking advantage of the potentialities of the Mesh Reduction techniques in general.  This volume constitutes an important reference base from which to discuss new ideas and critically compare results before developed solutions and tools are released to end professional users.…
