Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. As part of our family's cultural life, we have a large collection of old photographs showing Indian people, their camps, and scenes of many traditional activities. Among our favorites of these are ones that include native children, perhaps because four of them have grown up in our own household. It would be wonderful if the photographers had left a lot of information with these old pictures. Instead, we are lucky when they have names, dates or tribal affiliations; many are just blank dn the back. In this book, the title on each page will include whatever facts we have. After that, what we've written is based on our own research combined with thoughts and ideas inspired by our family's cultural life. These words are mainly presented for pleasure; the value of each photo speaks for itself. Life for the Indian people of North America has changed a great deal since most of these pictures were taken. Instead of tipis, they now live in houses with tvs and running water. Instead of horses, they ride motorcycles and cars. Modern hunters get most of their food from supermarkets, while the girls use hair dryers and dream about favorite singing stars. Yet, if you go to the tribes and locations mentioned in the titles, chances are you'll still find kids with pride in their traditional cultures. On special occasions, they might even be dressed as you see them in these pictures. We present this book most of all to encourage such kids in keeping alive their tribal cultures, while at the same time showing people of other cultures why Indian childhood is something to be very proud of.
