First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Condition is AS NEW in a Hard Cover. Pages clean and tight. Bery nice copy of this hard to find title on early Illinois Civil War era history. "They Called It Treason" describes how renegade groups, including Copperheads, guerrillas, bushwhackers, and outlaw gangs, terrorized Illinois during the Civil War. These groups consisted of anti-war Democrats (Copperheads), deserters, and armed gangs who engaged in violence and theft, particularly in the river counties of central and southern Illinois. The Republicans' label "Copperheads" referred to the poisonous snake and was applied to anti-war Democrats who criticized the Lincoln administration.
