Marbled paper is worn and scuffed with general wear. Vellum spine has hand written title and author with some additional discoloration and staining from time. Overall, covers are worn, but very strong. Bookplate and former store sticker on front pastedown. Pencil note on ffep. Large woodcut vignette depicting a geographical map of Italy held up by cherubs with a view of the city of Modena in the background with the Ghirlandina tower. Additional engraving on page 1 by Perotti. Interior has creasing, general toning with minor spotting, but all is in excellent condition and legible. Esemplare nel complesso in buono stato di conservazione. Stanislao Bardetti (1688-1767), teologo e storico di origini piacentine, è considerato modenese d'adozione. Così la voce B. (Dizionario Biografico degli italiani, vol. VI) a proposito di queste opere: "Gli studi sugli antichi italici, cui il B. aveva atteso per lunghi anni, videro la luce, ad opera di volenterosi editori, solo dopo la sua morte: De, primi abitatori dell'Italia, Modena 1769; Della lingua de' primi abitatori dell'Italia, ibid. 1772. In contrasto con il Maffei e A. S. Mazzocchi che ritenevano preliminare a qualsiasi indagine storica sull'origine dei popoli antichi l'esame accurato delle testimonianze superstiti della loro lingua, il B. credeva che l'indagine propriamente storica dovesse precedere quella linguistica. E, secondo il B., dall'indagine storica sui primitivi abitatori dell'Italia, da lui abitualmente chiamati "Circumpadani", risultava che i più antichi tra essi erano i Liguri e gli Umbri (di stirpe celtica) e i Taurisci (di stirpe germanica); di origine ligustica sarebbero stati poi i Siculi e gli Aborigines, mentre gli Umbri dell'età storica sarebbero discesi dagli Isumbri o Isombri stanziati presso il Lario; di origine umbra erano infine da considerarsi anche gli Aurunci".
