First Clarke edition, "the best edition" of this "excellent descriptive poem by an ingenious and unfortunate author" (Lowndes), first published in 1762. This edition includes a biography of Falconer and fine engravings by James Fittler, engraver to George III, after drawings by the famed maritime painter Nicholas Pocock. Clarke would later publish The Life of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1809 with John McArthur. Lowndes, p. 776; NCBEL II 665. "Clive Richards, City financier and owner of the finest collection of Nelson letters in private hands - obituary", The Telegraph, 23 April 2021. Octavo (235 x 144 mm), pp. xlvi, 220. Three engraved plates and five vignettes by James Fittler after Nicholas Pocock. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, spine gilt-lettered direct, raised bands, compartments decorated with gilt devices, boards gilt-stamped with ornate panels, board edges and turn-ins with single fillet gilt rule, green endpapers, edges gilt and gauffered with a foliate pattern. Armorial bookplate of one Michael & Dawn, possibly of the Buller family, contemporary signature of one Arthur Steward to first blank recto, ink shelfmarks to second blank verso, modern bookplate of Louis Roeder, later in the collection of Clive Richards although unmarked as such. Spine sunned, repaired at head, joints rubbed and crudely recoloured, boards slightly soiled, staining to margins: a very good copy.
