Unsere Losung ist dieselbe geblieben: Förderung echt deutschen Sinnes in der heranwachsenden Jugend. Wir folgen hierbei in erster Linie der alten und neuen Geschichte unsers Volks. Wir erinnern an den 400jährigen Geburtstag Georg?s von Frundsberg, berichten von dem Großen Kurfürsten, wie er vor 200 Jahren die Schlacht bei Fehrbellin geschlagen, erzählen die Gründung von Bremerhafen, schildern unsern Kaiser in seinem Daheim zu Babelsberg und gedenken des Dichters Hoffmann von Fallersleben und des größten deutschen Malers der Gegenwart, Wilhelm Kaulbach. Tritt uns hier deutsche Art und deutsches Wesen entgegen, so erzählt uns dagegen die Biographie Napoleons III. von welscher Untreue und Hinterlist. Das Gebiet des Kultur- und Völkerlebens betreten wir, indem wir in der Skizze »Ein Trapperleben« daran erinnern, daß vor hundert Jahren der kühne Jäger Daniel Boone das reiche Land Kentucky fand und kolonisirte. Die jetzt überall besprochene Frage der Leichenverbrennung führt uns in ein Columbarium. Dann geben wir ein interessantes Sittenbild aus Australien »Ein Lynchgericht«, erzählen von verschiedenen unbekannten Mittheilungsweisen 2c. Reichen Stoff bietet ferner die Naturkunde dar. Die Aufsätze über »Das Seelenleben der Thiere«, über »Die Rolle der Pilze im Naturhaushalte«, über »Naturfeuerwerk«, stehen auf dem Boden der neuesten Forschung und sind ebenso interessant wie belehrend. Den Anfang der Sammlung bildet eine freie Bearbeitung von Boz? »Sylvesterglocken« (Anm.: frei nach Charles Dickens), eine der schönsten Weihnachtsgeschichten des berühmten englischen Schriftstellers. Am Schluß des Buches bringen wir eine kurze Chronik vom 1. Januar 1873 bis zum Juli 1874. Dazwischen finden sich, außer den vorgenannten Aufsätzen, noch eine Anzahl kleinerer Artikel und Notizen aus den verschiedensten Gebieten der Kunst und Wissenschaft. So ist der Inhalt des vorliegenden Jahrbuches für die »Welt der Jugend« ebenso reichhaltig wie vielseitig, ebenso unterhaltend wie belehrend und anregend. Eine große Anzahl guter Illustrationen trägt dazu bei, den Text zu veranschaulichen und dem Ganzen zur Zierde zu dienen, so daß auch die Ausstattung befriedigen wird.
