(219*139 mm). After an expedition into eastern Africa in the company of Sir Richard Burton, Speke returned to England to announce his hypothesis that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. His fellow geographers, however, including Burton, were doubtful of his claim. Under the sponsorship of Sir Roderick Murchison, Speke returned to Africa and Lake Victoria Nyanza, this time finding conclusively that the lake was the source of the great river; this work is his published account of that expedition. His claims, however, were still controversial--indeed, he and Burton were to meet and debate the issue, but the day prior to the meeting Speke was killed in a hunting accident. GRANT Captain. In the years 1863 and 1864 Speke published, respectively, JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE and, WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE. Despite the confusing titles, the "Journal" actually covers his second expedition, with James Grant, while "What Led To" narrates his first journey in the company of Burton. After an expedition into eastern Africa in the company of Sir Richard Burton, Speke returned to England to announce his hypothesis that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. However, his fellow geographers, including Burton, were skeptical of this claim. Under the sponsorship of Sir Roderick Murchison, President of the Royal Geographical Society, Speke went back to Africa and Lake Victoria Nyanza, and when he returned home he claimed that this time he had found conclusive evidence that the lake was indeed the source of the great river. This work is an account of that expedition. It details his day-by-day adventures in his search for the source of the Nile, including myriad accounts of experiences such as his enjoyment of courtly life in the native palace in Uganda and, of course, expeditions of big game hunting. But he never lost sight of "the problem [he] went to solve," and returned with what he claimed was conclusive proof that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. For his work, he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographic Society.

A landmark work in the history of African exploration. Handsomely bound in contemporary marbled paper covered boards, with tan leather spine and corners. The leather backstrip has 7 raised bands and brightly gilt-stamped red and black leather spine labels. It is beautifully and elaborately tooled with black rules and leaf ornaments. The endpapers feature marbled paper in a fan pattern that matches the front and rear covers. Well illustrated with about 75 engravings (chiefly from drawings by Captain Grant -- a few tissue-guarded), and two maps. One of the maps is a full page page map in blue and red, by Lieut. Francis Wilford that shows the course of Nile from its source. Bound in at the rear is a very large folding color map of Eastern Equatorial Africa by Keith Johnston, with the route of the expedition traced by hand in red. Apart from a little light foxing (small brown speckles), the maps are in FINE condition with no tears or inadvertent creases. "The importance of Speke's discoveries can hardly be overestimated. This is Speke's account of his 3rd African exploration expedition (1860-1863). The Royal Geographical Society sent Speke back to Africa to fix the location of Lake Victoria and determine if it really was the source of the Nile. Speke was in command of this expedition, accompanied by Captain Grant. Most of the 75 illustrations in this book are based on sketches by Grant. Speke and Grant became the first Europeans to travel from Zanzibar to the Central African Lakes and then north to the Mediterranean. Speke saw Lake Victoria again, and found Ripon Falls, the place where the Nile flows out of the great lake. Speke and Grant then travelled overland north to Godonkoro where Samuel Baker was waiting for them with fresh supplies and boats that took them down the navigable Nile to the Mediterranean. Because of dense vegetation, lack of supplies, disease, and exhaustion, Speke and Grant lost track of the Victoria Nile for days at a time on their walk to Godonkoro. They never saw Lake Kyoga or Lake Albert. While their expedition convinced most educated geographers that Lake Victoria was indeed the source of the Nile, they had not definitively proved it, a fact the excluded Burton delighted in pointing out. The first owner of this book was the Irish lawyer and Conservative politician, The Right Honourable John Edward Walsh (1816-1869) , Attorney-General for Ireland (1866) and Master of the Rolls in Ireland (1866-1869). Walsh's bookplate is on the front pastedown. It was common in the 19th century for book buyers to have their new books rebound in custom decorative bindings tailored to their individual taste. The bookbinder Walsh chose for the task was G. Walker of Dorset Street, Dublin. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
