Mit Adolf Hölzel begann ein neues Kapitel der modernen Malerei: Der 1853 in Ölmütz (Mähren…) geborene und 1934 in Stuttgart verstorbene Künstler entwickelte einen eigenständigen Weg zum modernen Bild. Das Ziel seines künstlerischen Ansatzes war weniger die völlige Gegenstandslosigkeit, vielmehr galt es, der eigentlichen Natur des Bildes als einer »mit Farbe bedeckten Fläche« (Maurice Denis) zu entsprechen. Hölzel agierte hier parallel zu Bestrebungen in ganz Europa: jenen von Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian oder Robert Delaunay. Seine neuen Bildlösungen erinnern oft an ein Kaleidoskop, bei dem der Künstler die Vielfalt der Farben und Formen im Bild zur Einheit werden lässt. Übermittelt von den Hölzel-Schülern Johannes Itten und Oskar Schlemmer am Bauhaus sowie durch Willi Baumeister wurden seine Gedanken zur Kunst zur theoretischen Grundlage der Moderne für folgende Generationen.
