Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Kiyoshi Sonobe (illustrator). 158 pages, chiefly illustrations (some color). Somewhat shelfworn. Book and dust jacket are both very good. Slipcase is sound but is worn, rubbed, and unevenly sun-faded at edges. Nihon no Tako (1970), by Yusaku Tawara with photographs by Kiyoshi Sonobe, is part of the postwar movement to document regional Japanese folk crafts, including kite-making traditions that were increasingly threatened by urbanization and industrialized toys. Scholars such as Cecile Laly cite the book as a valuable primary source for understanding regional kite forms and techniques, situating it within the broader mingei-influenced effort of the 1960s-70s to record and preserve traditional crafts.
