Paperback. Condition: New. An esthetician and single mother with no connections, Anastasia Soare risked her life escaping communist Romania to come to America. Raising Brows tells the remarkable story of how she built a billion-dollar beauty brand and went from watching Oprah's TV show to learn English, to shaping Oprah's eyebrows on the very same show years later.Anastasia disrupted the beauty industry by applying her art school training on the 'golden ratio' of beauty to eyebrows. Helping women find harmony with their face, Anastasia put eyebrows on the map. She pioneered new makeup products and built a glittering roster of clients like Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, and Cindy Crawford. But beneath the glossy exterior, Anastasia's path wasn't easy.In this powerful memoir, she shares her extraordinary journey, putting her Romanian values of hard work, persistence, and optimism to the test in Los Angeles, ignoring the landlords and bank managers who laughed when she tried to open a salon focusing on eyebrows.Anastasia's story serves as a powerful reminder that you can do anything you put your mind to so long as you are passionate and determined. As she says, 'it's the love and effort we put into our pursuits and relationships that truly define our success.'.

Paperback. Condition: New. Why is 'Why' Unique? Its Syntactic and Semantic Properties considers the behaviour of this peculiar wh-element across many different languages, including Ewe, Trevisan, Italian, Basque, German, Dutch, Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Hebrew. In ten original chapters, the authors explore various aspects of why-questions, such as the way why interacts with V2 constructions in Basque, with a subject clitic in Trevisan or how its morpho-syntactic make-up determines its merge position in Ewe, to mention but a few. Furthermore, a clear-cut distinction is established between high and low reason adverbials which are subsequently examined in why-stripping environments in Dutch. Beyond why proper, the book explores a special class of wh-expressions in some in-situ languages which give rise to unexpected why-construals with a touch of whining force. The objective is to explain the unusual syntactic position of these wh-expressions as well as their association with peculiar pragmatics. The questions are addressed for Cantonese: are what-initial sentences genuine questions? To what extent are Cantonese what-initial sentences similar to how-initial sentences in Mandarin? Beside these what-as-why questions, a special class of rhetorical questions, the doubly-marked interrogatives in Hebrew, come under scrutiny. Why is 'why' unique also concerns the interface with prosody and several experimental studies investigate precisely this aspect.

Hardback. Condition: New. FROM ESCAPING COMMUNISM TO SCULPTING THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS BROWS - THIS IS THE UNFORGETTABLE TRUE STORY OF BEAUTY MOGUL ANASTASIA SOARE.As a young mother, Anastasia risked everything to flee communist Romania and chase the American dream. She arrived with no English, no savings, and no guarantees she'd ever see her family again. What she did have was a secret weapon: a fierce, no-excuses work ethic passed down through generations of her family - work hard, don't complain, figure it out.In Raising Brows, the original 'Queen of Brows' shares her inspiring journey from cleaning salon stations to building a billion-dollar global beauty empire. From learning English by watching The Oprah Winfrey Show to later shaping Oprah's brows on live television, Anastasia is a testament to the power of passion and persistence. She disrupted the beauty industry with her pioneering application of the 'golden ratio' to eyebrow shaping - helping women everywhere find balance and confidence in their own faces. But behind the glitz and celebrity clientele - from Jennifer Lopez to Kim Kardashian to Michelle Obama - was a woman who faced rejection and impossible odds with unshakable determination. This is more than a memoir. It's a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and the magic that happens when you dare to believe in yourself. Perfect for dreamers, doers, and beauty lovers alike, Raising Brows will leave you inspired to shape your own destiny - one bold stroke at a time.
