De Noorse schrijfster Sigrid Undset, die in 1928 de Nobelprijs ontving voor haar historische romans, heeft met het verhaal over Olav Audunszoon een minder bekende maar boeiende roman geschreven, die nu opnieuw is uitgebracht ter gelegenheid van haar honderdste geboortedag. Dit verhaal draait om de liefde tussen Olav en Ingunn, en de strijd tussen hun persoonlijke verlangens en de plichten opgelegd door het middeleeuwse katholieke geloof. De roman biedt een realistisch en cultuur-historisch rijk beeld van het 13e-eeuwse Scandinavie. Olav, de zoon van Augun, en Ingunn Steinfinnsdochter worden geconfronteerd met bezwaren tegen hun verbintenis, en Olav moet plotseling naar Denemarken vluchten, waardoor Ingunn alleen achterblijft, afhankelijk van haar familie. Deze situatie is voor haar problematisch, bijna als die van een in de steek gelaten vrouw zonder rechten. Voordat Olav terugkeert, wordt Ingunn verleid door een IJslander. Undset beschrijft prachtig de worsteling van Olav om dit kind van een ander als zijn zoon te accepteren, de onopgeloste moord op de IJslander en Olavs eigen ontrouw met Thornhild Bjornsdochter.
