Condition: Good. First edition, privately printed, with long sections on Hartwell's Egyptian antiquities and its observatory. Inscribed 'A Monsieur de La Martine, Membre de l'Académie Française, Historien, Philosophe, Voyageur en Oriente, Hommage de Captaine Smyth … et de Dr Lee … Hartwell Avril le 28. 1853.' In 1864, Lee named the lunar sea Mare Smythii after him. The recipient here is Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869), the French poet, writer, and statesman, author of Impressions, souvenirs, pensées et paysages pendant un voyage en Orient (1835).
