ONE: 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. He is enclosing a letter from 'Dr Braun in Rome', and suggests that Smyth will be able to correct the translation. 'I am sorry Dr Braun is not more successful, but he has zeal in the Cause, & will not lose an opportunity.' TWO: 3pp., 12mo.…Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with remains of mount on blank page. A letter of condolence on the death of Smyth's tenth child, Caroline Mary Smyth (1834-1859). Northumberland has refrained from writing while the death was 'a fresh wound', 'for I know that no human condolence could give you any solace to your grief'. His wife, who shares in his sentiments, thanks Mrs Smyth [ Eliza Anne Warington, the bluestocking 'Annarella' (1788-1873) ] for sending her a sermon, 'as it was an assurance of a kindly feeling, & of mutual sincere condolence'. The letter ends with news of a visit to Alnwick by Doctor Lee and his wife.

Smyth, a naval officer and surveyor, one of the founders of the RGS, he was the author of many volumes, including an earlier astronomical work "The Cycle of Celestial Objects for the Use of Naval, Military, and Private Astronomers" (1844), for which he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and "Aedes Hartwellianae" in 1851. The astronomical observatory at Hartwell described in great detail in this book was built between 1830 and 1839 by John Lee (who also funded the printing of this volume) to Smyth's specifications.

First Edition of the first book in English to be wholly devoted to Sardinia. Smyth, a British naval officer, visited Sardinia twice during the Napoleonic wars, and in 1823 and 1824, was engaged in the survey of its coasts as part of a larger survey he conducted of the Italian, Sicilian, Greek, and African coasts. The survey led to the production of a large number of detailed charts which are the basis of those still in use (see DNB). The present work includes chapters on political history, produce and resources, the inhabitants, and the coasts, and appendices containing statistics relative to the cities and villages of the island, the fish frequenting its coasts, money, weights and measures, and the market prices of various types of food and wine. Particolare di grande interesse, mai riscontrato precedentemente nelle carte dello Smyth. Buono stato di conservazione generale, restauro ad un piccolo strappo nella parte inferiore e nel margine sinistro della carta, ma senza fastidio. Rara.
