Small 4to (52cm). pp. 30 (Francis Douce text), [64] first plate unnumbered, 31 numbered. Very Good. One faint previous owner embossed stamp applied to floral ffep, wear at corners, spine is a bit wrinkled from previous repair attempt, hinges tender with some pull to front pastedown/ffep at gutter, small dirt stain in text and pages slightly drab. The plethora of title and plate variations since the 1815 first edition deserves an honorable mention, but first appearance of title as such. On wove paper roughly eleven inches by seven and three-quarters; dimensions of print roughly seven inches by four and a half. Image clear and unaffected, on paper aged and creased, with some staining to extremities. Smith's monogram in bottom left-hand corner. The figure is formally dressed, in frock-coat and stockings, with his hat tucked under his left arm. Clearly a portrait, but of whom is uncertain: it is not among the six works by Smith catalogued by the National Portrait Gallery. A charming evocation of print culture in the early part of the nineteenth century.

The letter begins: 'My dear Sir | May I rely upon the kindness you have so often shewn me, in adding once more to your many attentions - it is to introduced the bearer who is my eldest son to the librarian in order to his obtaining leave to read, and also to copy out any extract from the Harleian or other collections.' He explains that the Marquess Wellesley, 'who as Steward of the Kings Household is sone of the Trustees of the Museum has asked me for the copy of a pedigree of his family from one of the Harleian MSS. of which my son has theh reference'.
