Limited edition of 500 copies of which this is copy number 94. First edition thus. Unpaginated but 20 pp. including 3 full-page illustrations, illustration on the title page and decorative features by Percy J. Smith (1882-1948). . Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was a famous English essayist, possibly best remembered today for his Tales From Shakespeare written with his sister, and his Essays of Elia. This book contains one of his essays from Last Essays of Elia, beautifully illustrated by Percy Smith. The following extract from the start of the essay gives and idea of the contents: "I chanced upon the prettiest, oddest, fantastical thing of a dream the other night, that you shall hear of. I had been reading the "Loves of the Angels," and went to bed with my head full of speculations, suggested by that extraordinary legend. It had given birth to innumerable conjectures, and, I remember, the last waking thought, which I gave expression to on my pillow, was a sort of wonder, "what could come of it." I was suddenly transported, how or whither I could scarcely make out - but to some celestial region. It was not the real heavens neither - not the downright Bible heaven - but a kind of fairyland heaven, about which a poor human fancy may have leave to sport and air itself, I will hope, without presumption. Methought - what wild things dreams are! - I was present - at what would you imagine? - at an angel's gossiping. " The book is bound in the original orange paper covered boards with a white cloth spine and black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some soiling to the boards and spine and patches of noticeable lifting to a thin layer of the paper covering both boards. There is a little damage and loss to the paper covering the corner tips and a 1/4" dent that has caused a little damage near the top corner of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with heavy browning to the front and rear endpapers. There is no inscription.
