Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Not For Heaven was a story of midwest America, of a small town of, as the author says, (illustrator). In the spring of 1934, Doubleday, Doran & Company announced a prize contest which was to be open to those authors who had, had a story published or accepted by Story magazine. The contest was to close on November 1, 1934. The judges were Martha Foley for Story magazine, Lewis Gannett, book critic of the New York Herald Tribune, and myself, representing the publishers. The award for the best novel submitted was to be $1,000 over and above royalties. There were no second or consolation prizes. Instead of giving only one prize of $1,000, the publishers have awarded two prizes of $1,000 each, to Dorothy McCleary for her novel, Not For Heaven, and to Edward Anderson for his novel, Hungry Men. Just how it turned out that the publishers rescued the judges from a dilemma of riches and made two prizes grow where only one was offered, makes an interesting story, and accounts for two books in one binding as this month's selection. Her report to President Dwight Eisenhower based on her 1955 research known as "The Report that Shocked the President", on the unfitness of American children as compared with their European counterparts, led to the formation of the President's Council on Youth Fitness. Her Fitness Book laid the foundational blueprint for the modern fitness movement by shifting exercise from an elite athletic pursuit to a daily necessity for the general public.
