The first edition of this two concise biographies on Anthony van Dyck and John Hoppner, published as part of Methuen's series titled 'Little Books on A…rt.Bound by Bickers.These two biographies explore the life and works of the two great painters.Van Dyck was a Flemish Baroque artist of the seventeenth century, his volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-four plates.John Hoppner was a portrait painter who was mostly active in the eighteenth century, known for being a brilliant colourist. This volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-nine plates.Collated, complete.From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front paste downs. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Bickers. Externally, smart. Spine and extremities are a little faded. Minor rubbing and marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to 'Van Dyck'. Light bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Very Good. Various (illustrator). book.
