First published in 1845, this later 1908 edition is the first to be edited by New Zealand politician Sir Robert Stout, who was the 13th premier of New Zealand, and was noted for his support of liberal causes such as women's suffrage.Edward Jerningham Wakefield's work offers a first hand account of his experiences as an agent for the New Zealand Company during the early years of British colonisation.He details Maori culture, land negotiations, and the challenges of settlement, describing the conflicts arising from land purchases and British expansion.Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen photographic plates.
