Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 338 pp. s early as 1901 Churchill is quoted as saying "The only weapon with which we can expect to cope with great nations is the Navy. I confess I do trust the Navy ". When Churchill first arrived at the Admiralty in 1911 it was in a state of upheav…al. To the consternation of some of the admirals he threw his weight behind the reforms Fisher had begun so that the Royal Navy was on a proper war footing when hostilities came in 1914. Churchill was to return to the Admiralty in 1939 when the signal went around the Fleet 'Winston is back'. Churchill has been open to criticism for often overruling his naval advisers and has been blamed for the Dardanelles fiasco in the First World War, and the loss of PRINCE OF WALES and REPULSE in the Second. The author's detailed research and professional judgment results in a balanced picture and a fitting tribute to Churchill's memory from the Service to which he gave so much.
