Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. "American Colonial Furniture", a monograph by Esther Singleton (a member of the Royal Society of Arts, Great Britain), was published in 1914 by The Mentor Department of Fine Arts as Serial No. 62. This essay was then bound in a large collection of disparate articles similar to a Sammelband (a collection of articles on disparate subjects). The essay, a stand-alone monograph, was cleanly disbound. It is illustrated with 22 black-and-white illustrations through the text, as well as 6 sepia gravures printed on stiff card stock; the article is not a definitive monograph, because of its brevity, but it touches on some important styles that are key to understanding such splendid artistic masterpieces. The text is genial and the essay is informative. There are 22 monochrome pictures through the text and six full page sepia gravures. The pictures through the text are discussed, and each plate illustration is given a full page explanation. The six full sized sepia gravures are as follows : Interior with Late Colonial Furniture; Jacobean Interior with Gate-Legged Table; Court Cupboard, Jacobean, 1690 - 1774; Paneled Interior, 1700, showing Old Rocker and Windsor Chair; Anglo-Dutch Highboy, about 1720; Chippendale Bed and Ribbon-Backed Chair. Published by Benjamin Blom, New York, 1968
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Reproductions of Old Prints / Halfton Photographs (illustrator). Here is the 1968 reissue of"Dutch New York" by Esther Singleton. The book was issued by Benjamin Blom, who was the original publisher of the book in 1909. This is an officially deaccessioned library book, that remains solid, with some obvious evidence of use, but no abuse, remaining clean with a low amount of library markings (There is a pocket and library markings on the rear free end-paper, as well a couple of stamps on the half-title. If there are library marks through the text, they are few, the interior text being clean and free of marking - no underlining, no marginalia. This book covers the earliest history of New York City, which at first consisted only of a small fort and a few settler's homes & businesses. The frontispiece is a reproduction of the first Mayor, on Cornelius Steenwyck. The text covers that early history, as well as discussions about the daily life of the Dutch people who were the first to populate the peninsula (aside from the native tribes who already lived there). There are many interesting pictures, some of them reproductions of old engravings, and some of them halftone photographs. The are pictures of objects held in the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, including several views of a doll's house from that early time. This doll's house clearly shows what the interior of Dutch homes of that time looked like. The greater concentration of the book is about the daily life and culture of the Dutch inhabitants of New Amsterdam. There are pictures of objects used in daily life (china, drinking cups, cradles, etc.) Many of these , but not all, are also on display in the Rijks Museum. It is a valuable book for anyone eager to learn about life in those earliest years of what would become the mightiest city in the world. Of course this was then New Amsterdam. CONTENTS : * Settlement & Early Conditions of New Netherland * Orchards & Gardens, Houses & Streets of New Amsterdam * Costume * Rooms & Furniture * Pictures, Silver, China, Glass, and Curios * New Amsterdam Housekeeping * Servants & Slaves * Education * Religion, Persecution, & Superstition * Courtship & Marriage * Politicians & Surgeons, Births & Deaths * Taverns & Excise Laws * Sports, Festivals, & Pastimes * Merchants & Trade TITLE : Dutch New York AUTHOR : Esther Singleton (1865 - 1930) IMPRINT : Benjamin Blom PLACE : New York DATE : 1968 EDITION : Reissue by the original publisher.
