Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. When Trelleborg was excavated in the 1930s as the first of the great ring fortresses of the Viking Age, it was a true archaeological enigma. Why was it built, and by whom? Today we know that the strange, circular rampart at Slagelse was built under King Harald Bluetooth in the late 900s. Tre…lleborg, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has helped reshape our image of the Viking Age in Denmark. The book follows the work of the archaeologists from the first careful excavations and speculations to the sensational discoveries that have led to what we know today about Trelleborg. Viking-Age Ring Fortresses tells the fascinating story of five of the most important monuments of the Vikings in Denmark: Trelleborg, Aggersborg, Fyrkat, Nonnebakken and Borgring. The series is a story of our knowledge about the Viking Age, and at the same time it focuses on the questions and riddles that the fortresses still hold. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. The performance of rituals is a key component in understanding the culture of Late Iron-Age and Viking-Age Scandinavia, which was marked by tremendous social and religious transformations. New approaches to social, political, and religious rituals are currently offering stimulating new perspectives on…the period and the entanglements of symbolism, the exercise of power, materiality and agency. Research on finds such as iconographic objects or buildings associated with rituals, as well as new interpretations of well-known textual and material sources points to the continued relevance of the ritual perspective for exploring the Viking-Age mind-set. This volume contains the proceedings of the 39th Interdisciplinary Viking Symposium, held on 20th May 2022 at Aarhus University. The five chapters of the book pose questions of what, how, and why as well as by or for whom rituals of various kinds were performed in the Viking Age in a predominantly pre-Christian context. By considering the involvement of people, words, things, and spaces in ritual acts, it seeks to deepen our understanding of ritual performance in the period from a truly interdisciplinary perspective.

Hardback. Condition: New. Aggersborg. Viking-Age Ring Fortresses tells the fascinating story of one of the five most important monuments of the Vikings in Denmark. The ring fortresses were built under King Harald Bluetooth in the late 900s. This book follows the archaeologists who uncovered the history of the largest of the fort…resses - Aggersborg. In 1945 a researcher sat studying an archaeological survey at the National Museum in Copenhagen. The circular earthwork on the plan looked exactly like the strange Viking Age fortress that had been excavated at Trelleborg ten years earlier, but this stronghold was twice as large. Excavations showed that the earthwork on the plan was indeed a ring fortress like Trelleborg. When the 'new' ring fortress Aggersborg was discovered, one of the greatest mysteries in Danish history grew even bigger. What was the purpose and why were they built? Aggersborg is placed in North Jutland close to Norway, and this may be the key to size of this circular giant.

Paperback. Condition: New. The world wars, genocides and extremist ideologies of the 20th century are remembered very differently across Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, resulting sometimes in fierce memory disputes. This book investigates the complexity and contention of the layers of memory of the troubled 20th centur…y in the region. Written by an international group of scholars from a diversity of disciplines, the chapters approach memory disputes in methodologically innovative ways, studying representations and negotiations of disputed pasts in different media, including monuments, museum exhibitions, individual and political discourse and electronic social media. Analyzing memory disputes in various local, national and transnational contexts, the chapters demonstrate the political power and social impact of painful and disputed memories. The book brings new insights into current memory disputes in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. It contributes to the understanding of processes of memory transmission and negotiation across borders and cultures in Europe, emphasizing the interconnectedness of memory with emotions, mediation and politics.
