Als ich noch auf den Sch…ulbänken des Gymnasiums saß, fiel sie mir in die Hände und regte damals meine Wissbegierde auf das Lebhafteste an, ja sie war es, welche in mir die Vorliebe für physikalische und technische Probleme erweckte. Das Verständnis, wie es möglich ist, auf Drähten Nachrichten in die Ferne zu senden und sie zu lesen, das ich aus diesem klar und elegant geschriebenen Vortrage des berühmten Verfassers, dem die Telegraphie selbst die grösste Förderung verdankt, schöpfte, machte mir damals sehr grofsen Eindruck. Denn der Unterricht in der Physik, den das Gymnasium bot, war damals noch erheblich geringfügiger und mangelhafter, als er es jetzt ist, und die Erklärung technischer Errungenschaften wurde als unwesentlich ganz übergangen. In dieser Schrift waren aber die Wege, die zum Ziele führten und auch die vergeblichen Versuche, die die Vorläufer des Erfolges waren, so klar und knapp auseinandergesetzt, daß sie selbst bei ungenügenden Vorkenntnissen leicht verstanden werden konnten, so daß die Schrift wirklichen Nutzen und wirkliche Bereicherung des Wissens bot."
