Through his solid soldiering, he was promoted to Maj.Gen. in July 1862. Commanded the 12th Corps and 5th Corps at Gettysburg. Assumed command of the Military District of Vicksburg in April, 1864 and later the 20th Corps as part of Sherman's Campaign into Georgia. His last assignment was in command of the Dept. of the Mississippi. This very nicely produced book is a tribute to his life and military service. …
