Da die Gesundheitsforschung zunehmend auf die Analyse biologischer Proben angewiesen ist, bestehen ethische Bedenken hinsichtlich der Art und Weise, wie diese Proben gesammelt, verwendet, gelagert und manchmal wiederverwendet, weitergegeben und exportiert werden, ohne dass die ursprünglichen Spender darüber informiert werden. Infolgedessen haben eine Reihe von Forschern versucht, die Präferenzen der Forschungsteilnehmer in Bezug auf die Verwendung, Lagerung und Weitergabe von biologischen Proben sowohl in den Industrieländern als auch in den Entwicklungsländern zu untersuchen. Leider gab es in Südafrika bisher keine derartige Untersuchung.
