Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Limited Edition. John Raymond Shute. The Broken Square. Monroe, North Carolina: Nocalore Press, 1932. First edition, bound in ivory cloth, 94 pp. Presentation copy to Harold Van Buren Voorhis, "one of six "extra" copies" (in addition to the nine published subscribers), signed and dated 19 December, 1932. Sound binding, with soiling to cover, spine sunned with two small dings. Overall a very good copy of this rare book, the first issued from Nocalore Press. John Raymond Shute II (1904-1988) was a prominent American Masonic scholar, author, innovator, and businessman from Monroe, North Carolina. Born on January 14, 1904, he was initiated into Freemasonry at age 21 and quickly rose to become Worshipful Master of his lodge. Passionately dedicated to Masonic research and education, Shute founded the North Carolina Lodge of Research No. 666 (America's first research lodge) in 1930-1931 and played a central role in establishing or reviving numerous appendant bodies during the Great Depression era, including the Grand College of Rites (for preserving extinct rites and degrees), the Society of Blue Friars (honoring outstanding Masonic authors), the Knights of the York Cross of Honour, the Allied Masonic Degrees, the Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, the Knights Beneficent of the Holy City (CBCS), and the Knight Masons. A prolific writer, he authored or edited around twenty Masonic books and works (such as History of the Cryptic Rite in North Carolina), contributed extensively to ritual development, and helped shape modern American York Rite and esoteric Masonic organizations. His efforts, often in collaboration with figures like Harold V.B. Voorhis and William Mosely Brown, had a lasting impact on Masonic scholarship and small, selective bodies across the U.S. Shute died on November 27, 1988, and his extensive collection is housed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.…

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Limited Edition. John Raymond Shute. Voice of the Vault. Monroe, North Carolina: Nocalore Press, 1933. First edition, one of 18 copies printed, bound in gold cloth, 97 (1) pp. Presentation copy to H. V. A. Parsell (#18 on the list of 18 subscribers), with subsequent presentation inscription from Parsell to "Bro. Leslie G. Schaumann, New York, 17 October. A.D. 1953," just beneath Shute's of 1933. Scattered, light pencil [grammatical] corrections in, I believe, Parsell's hand. Light soiling to cover, corners and along top edge of front cover bumped; some scrapes to upper hinge. Nevertheless an attractive copy of this rare book, the second issue from Nocalore Press. Henry Van Arsdale Parsell Jr. (c. 1868 - August 25, 1962) was a multifaceted New York figure known as an electrical engineer/inventor, clergyman (later bishop), author, and a key (if transitional) personality in early 20th-century irregular/esoteric Masonry, particularly the Rite of Memphis. Rev. Leslie G. Schaumann (1896-1969) was a clergyman (Holy Orthodox Church in America), esoteric/Masonic scholar, and active participant in New York-area high-degree and Rosicrucian circles. He lived in the Ossining/Cortlandt/Peekskill area of New York and was involved in Rosicrucian/SRIA circles, serving as Junior Magus alongside Henry Van Arsdale Parsell (Senior Magus) in the Societas Rosicruciana in America (SRIA) under George Winslow Plummer. They conducted services together, including Plummer's Rosicrucian Requiem in 1944. Active in Cryptic Rite bodies (e.g., Peekskill Council No. 55) and other York Rite/appendent orders. He appears in New York Cryptic proceedings as a chaplain and officer in the 1950s. He was part of the same esoteric preservation scene as Parsell, Shute, Voorhis, and the Grand College of Rites/Nocalore Press group. By the early 1950s, Parsell was transferring materials and knowledge from his Memphis Rite holdings and personal library to trusted colleagues before GCR absorption and his later years.…
