From dust jacket: He reminds some of Grizzly Adams -- or Santa Claus -- with a broad, weathered body marked by sawgrass cuts and a beard that hangs from his chin like Spanish moss. Clyde Butcher looks as rugged and durable as the four-million-acre Florida Everglades he photographs and calls home. Butcher creates images as oversized as the man himself, giant black-and-white portraits of primeval paradise that connect people to their disappearing natural heritage, captured with a primitive wooden box camera. But Bucher's story is a modern one, a tale of struggle against waste and human carelessness that cost the life of Butcher's son and drove him to the solitude of the Everglades. It was there he discovered a living, timelss beauty found nowhere else on earth, and began to record it on film. But he also encountered another kind of loss, a squandering of perhaps the last chance to save America's most threatened wilderness. Like many of his generation, Butcher vowed to live life by his own rules. Unlike most, he held firm. The result is a wild roller coaster of a life, and a mesmerizing, inspired book.
