Der Wind in den Weiden (…The Wind in the Willows) ist ein Roman für Kinder, den Kenneth Grahame 1908 veröffentlichte. Der Roman ist einer der großen englischen Kinderbuchklassiker. Es gibt Nachfolger von William Horwood, der erste ist Die Weiden im Winter. 2015 wählten 82 internationale Literaturkritiker und -wissenschaftler den Roman zu einem der bedeutendsten britischen Romane. Der scheue Maulwurf flieht vor dem Frühjahrsputz und sieht das erste Mal in seinem Leben einen Fluss. Er trifft auf die lebenstüchtige Wasserratte, mit der er sich anfreundet. Die Wasserratte stellt ihm den herzlich-gutmütigen, aber anstrengend selbstverliebten Kröterich vor, den Bewohner eines beeindruckenden Herrenhauses, der ganz versessen auf technische Errungenschaften wie Motorboote, teure Wohnwagen und Autos ist, mit denen er wilde Ausflüge zu starten pflegt, die in der Regel mit Unfällen enden. Auch macht der Maulwurf über die Ratte die Bekanntschaft mit dem knorrig-ehrwürdigen Dachs, den die beiden in seinem Domizil im Wilden Wald besuchen. Auf dem Rückweg nimmt der Maulwurf die Witterung eines vertrauten Geruchs auf. Zunächst weiß er nicht, was es ist, doch dann wird ihm klar, dass es sich um einen alten Bau handelt, den er vor langer Zeit aufgegeben hat. Die ungeduldige Ratte, die wegen des ungemütlichen Wetters und ihrer Sehnsucht nach dem Fluss zur Eile drängt, zieht den zögernden Maulwurf mit sich, bis er in Tränen ausbricht. Erschrocken über sich selbst entschuldigt sich die Ratte beim Maulwurf und gemeinsam suchen und finden sie das alte Heim des Maulwurfs, wo die beiden den Tag an einem prasselnden Kaminfeuer und bei einem improvisierten Abendessen, bestehend aus alten Konserven und Bier, ausklingen lassen. Der Schotte Grahame wuchs als Kind bei seiner Großmutter in einem Haus am Fluss auf und unternahm als Erwachsener viele Bootsfahrten mit seinem Sohn. Abends erzählte er ihm Geschichten über die Tiere, die sie trafen. Die Abenteuer, die die Grundlage dieses Romans bildeten, verfasste er ebenfalls für seinen vierjährigen Sohn, dem er die Kapitel in die Ferien nachsandte. Ernest Howard Shepard (* 10. Dezember 1879 im Stadtbezirk City of Westminster in London; ? 24. März 1976 in Midhurst, West Sussex) war ein englischer Illustrator (Pu der Bär, Der Wind in den Weiden). Insgesamt besorgte er den Bildschmuck von 34 Büchern. Besonders bedeutend wurde seine Zusammenarbeit mit Kenneth Grahame (1859?1932), dessen autobiographisch beeinflusste Werke The Golden Age (1928) und Dream Days (1930) er bebilderte. He has now 'made sufficient progress with Monmouthshire' to be able to give Shephard 'a line': 'The first two verses bear upon the Wye valley and the Usk valley, of which Tintern is the be…st symbol. The last verse states that should King Arthur return to set up his table once more, he would be able to make a rapid fortune by providing tea, | With Guinevere and Lancelot | Alert to keep the water hot.' He suggests that 'the lower part of the page shows King Arthur and his knights waiting on a crowd of trippers, and in the upper part you have Tintern, and perhaps a winding road crowded with cars and chars-à-banc, with a background of wooded mountain scenery.' He concludes by stating that he has 'asked Mr. Ashley Cooper, the cricket collector', to let Shepard 'have the three Graces', with the assurance that he will return them 'safely and quickly'. The poem appeared in Punch in the same year.

Much on art and other artists as well as work habits and family matt…ers. Shepard describes a fishing expedition where he almost caught a porpoise. In one of the last letters he describes the building of his new home. The drawings are of various scenes and include an elaborate one of a locomotive as well as several self-portraits. An exceptional collection of letters and drawings in Very Good to Fine condition.

A wonderful collection of 13 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) (18 pages) by the illustrator of Winnie-the-Pooh and 5 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED (TLSs) by his wife, Norah, all to the American publisher of the Pooh books. Content includes health reports (the letters date from the end of his life: he died at… the age of 96) and news, but much of the letters concern his work including 8 letters that mention the Pooh books or their offspring such as THE POOH COOK BOOK and THE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN VERSE BOOK. Five of the letters are signed with his affectionate name, Kip. The final letters are by Norah after Shepard's death.
