Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Published by Legislative Authority. Much shelf wear to tips, corners, and edges of the book; no jacket, as issued. Colonel Sheldon attempts to give a comprehensive history of the part played by Vermonters, civilian and military, in the war. Upholding the Civil War tradition of "Put the Vermonters ahead" the state was among the first to answer the call. The 1st Vermont Infantry, serving on the Mexican Border in 1917, therefore already a part of the United States Army, had a war strength of about 3,000. The 1st Vermont like many National Guard units was dispersed among several fighting units. Primarily machine-gunners the Vermonters serving mainly in the 4th and 27th Divisons encountered fierce fighting during their service. By the end of the war 200 Vermonters, either killed in action or dead of disease, lay in military cemeteries in France. Sheldon, a lieutenant in a machine gun company during the war, was a notable figure in the military and hunting history of early 20th century Vermont. He served as Commissioner of Fish and Game, State of Vermont for five years. Following his state service he was appointed United States Game Conservation Officer for Vermont. Every effort is made to ship all books and other items within 24 hours. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
