Moderate wear to exterior. Sheldon was the leader of the Social Gospel movement, which articulate and approach to Christian theology that became popular at the turn of the century and had a revival almost 100 years later. Advocates of the movement interpreted the Kingdom of God as requiring social as well as individual salvation and sought the betterment ofindustrialized society through application of the biblical principles of charity andjustice. The Social Gospel is rooted in American Protestant liberalism, which was largelyinfluenced by the ideologies of the Progressive Era during late nineteenth century.
