Previously, western yellow pine was used in California as a source of turpentine during the Civil War. The author discusses methods of utilizing the more resinous portions of the yellow pine of the South in the manufacture of wood-distillation products and suggests the possibility that the western species might serve the same purpose, especially since these trees, especially the stumps, are often quite resinous. The book provides an overview of the distribution of western yellow pine across the western United States, the methods the author used to take samples, and the distillation of those samples. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. Most volumes are NOT ex-library, but have former owner's signatures on the front endpapers. Four volumes are signed by Marshall Kay (1904-1975), the celebrated Columbia University geologist. Save for one volume, no external ownership markings.
