Garrison-Morton 4283: "Le Dran, famous French lithotomist, improved the operation of lithotomy. Murphy [pp. 109-10, 115] credits him for originating the lateral lithotomy usually attributed…to Cheselden, whose method he discusses." Heirs of Hippocrates 807. Copy of Samuel Sharp, with his pencil signature ("Samuel Sharp/ of Guy's Hospital/ London"). "Sharp was a pupil of Cheselden and was elected surgeon to Guy's Hospital in 1733. He was reputed to be a conservative surgeon, albeit with great technical ability. In many respects Sharp was the link between the older surgery of Cheselden and Pott and the new surgery of Hunter" (Rutkow, Illustrated History of Surgery, p. 278).
