In diesem Beitrag wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass die frühen Werke der argentinischen Kriminalliteratur in ihrer Gesamtheit eine eigene, ernstzunehmende literarische Gattung konstituieren. Setton zeigt, dass sich i…m Zeitraum von 1877 bis 1912 eine eigene Tradition der Detektivliteratur entwickelte, die zwar von verschiedenen Strömungen der europäischen Literatur beeinflusst wurde, jedoch in Form und Inhalt Spezifika aufweist, die er herausarbeitet: gesellschaftliche Position und Handlungsmodell des Detektivs, sein Verhältnis zur Polizei, die Bedeutung des Zufalls, die Berücksichtigung der Biographie des Verbrechers, die Nähe des Detektivs zum Künstler, Thematisierung der politischen und sozialen Probleme der in Argentinien entstehenden Republik, oft in Form einer kritisschen Einstellung gegenüber Regierung bzw. führender Elite; sowie schließlich der Gegensatz zwischen 'civilización' und 'barbarie'. Im Zentrum stehen Raúl Waleis, Paul Groussac, Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg, Horacio Quiroga, "FAZ" (Félix Alberto de Zabalía ?) und William Wilson (i.e. Vicente Rossi). Sie weisen gemeinsame Merkmale und Motive auf, entstehen aus der Rezeption und Umgestaltung unterschiedlicher Gattungsmuster der deutschen, englischen und französischen Literatur und zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie dem später vorherrschenden einseitigen Modell einer rein deduktiven Ermittlung bereits von Anfang an erstaunlich kritisch gegenüberstehen. 55 Seiten mit 7 Abb., broschiert (HeLix im Winter.
