Stuttgart 1955, 8°, 260 pp., orig. Leinenband. Friedrich Willhelm Sertürmer (1783-1841) named it "morphine" and confirmed its hypnotic and analgesic properties in experiments on animals. Since he could demonstrate the alkaline qualities of morphine which was something absolutely new at that time, Sertürner became the cofounder of a new type of chemistry now known as alkaloid chemistry. -cf. Berl. Jhb. Pharm., 27/1. - Berlin, bei Ferdinand Oehmigke, 1825, kl.8°, X, 284 pp., Frontispoiz Portrait von Johann Friedrich Westrumb, 1 Tafel, Pappband d.Zt.; feines Expl. Erstdruck! Journ. pract. Heilk., 65/2. - Berlin, Gedruckt und verlegt bei G. Reimer, 1827, Kl.8°, 136 pp., 1 lith. Taf., Broschur. Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Ferdinand Sertürner's (1783-1841) "first publications on morphine in 1805 and 1806 failed to attract attention. In 1817, when Sertürner republished the results of his research in enlarged and more detailed form, the importance of his work was recognized. Considering the obstacles confronting Sertürner's work on morphine, it is surprising that he succeeded at all. An autodidact with only sparse knowledge of the relevant literature, he conducted his research with the simplest equipment while performing the strenuous duties of an apothecary's assistant. Sometimes years elapsed between his research projects. Sertürner played an important part in that period of organic chemistry-between Scheele and F. F. Runge-when fundamental research was carried out by gifted investigators (mostly pharmacists) with only limited equipment. Before Davy, Sertürner established in 1806 that caustic alkalies are not elements, but compounds of oxygen plus another combustible element similar to hydrogen. He failed, however, to interest a scientific journal in publishing his paper. Sertürner's tendency toward speculation became so pronounced that even his most advanced colleagues often failed to comprehend him. His views on the life element "zoon," on the "cold nature of sunlight," on "atmospheric heat," and on "fire oxide" were unfounded and failed to stimulate productive thinking. Consequently, Sertürner acquired a dubious reputation, which partly explains w y his two further important discoveries were ignore d- He developed a theory on the formation of ether from alcohol and sulfuric acid and established formulas for three different "sulphovinic acids (ethyl sulfuric acids). Although he came close being correct, he met with universal rejection. No attention was paid to his paper dealing with the cholera epidemics prevalent at the time. In this work he was the first to point out the real cause of the disease. On the basis of the known fact that objects exposed to severe cold or heat no longer transmitted the disease, he ascribed its cause to a toxic, self-reproducing living agent. Only his work on morphine brought Sertürner numerous honors." EBERHARD SCHMAUDERER Eberhard Schmauderer, DSB XII, pp.321-321.…

Paris, Crochard, 1817. No wrappers. Extract from "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 5, Cahier 1. With titlepage and htitle to vol. 5. Pp. 21-42. First French edition (the German paper issued simutaneously in Gilbert's Annalen) of this groundbreaking paper claiming to be the first to announce the isolation of pure morphine from opium. This process marks an importent step in the beginnings of alkaloid chemistry, and the isolation of morphine is the first isolation of an alkali of vegetable origin. In his paper Sertuerner coined the word "morphine" after Morpheus (the Greek God of sleep). The isolation of morphine from opium, the first isolation of a natural product, was a seminal event in the development of pharmacology as an independent discipline. The purification kick-started natural product chemistry and quickly led to the isolation of a host of other alkaloids. Within a few years, in 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck of Darmstadt began selling morphine, resulting in the development of the eponymous company. Sertürner reported his first observations on Opium in 1805, which was mainly concerned with the constituent of meconic acid, but "it was only in 1817.(in the paper offered) that he unequivocally reported the isolation of pure morphine. He prepared it by extracting opium with hot water and precipitating morphine with ammonia. he obtained colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and alcohol. In order to establish that his crystals carried the pharmacological activity of raw opium, Sertuerner tested them on himself and three boys, "none older than seventeen.". It was a near-catastrophe." (Ryan J. Huxtable a. K.W. Schwarz).DEROSNE (1803) made claim of priority in the discovery of opium, but he only "prepared a crude extract of opium with alcohol and water, and obtained by potassium carbonate preciipitation, what he called "sel de Derosne". Derosne's alkaloidal fraction lacked narcotic properties, and was probably largely narcotine (also known as noscapine), perhaps with meconic acid, both abundant in opium." (Huxtable & Schwarz).Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1817 C,The offered issue contains another importent paper by Alexander v. Humboldt: "Sur les Lignes isothermes. (Extrait)", pp. 102-111 and a large folded engraved plate. Here Humboldt introduced "Isothermes" in meteorology. This extract issued at the same time as the larger memoir which appeared in "Mémoires de physique et de chimie de la Société d?Arcueil" (1817).…
