Seneca translated by a gentleman of Christ-Church, Oxon. The XXXIX Articles of the Church of England published in 1760 and originally written in… Latin, translated here by a Clergyman of the University of Oxford, identified as Thomas Fenton, Master of Arts, written in. Very good, some ink margin notes to last title, which also has burn holes to the fore-edge margin of its first several pages.

Volume I (1640): Opera Omnia with magnificent engraved frontispiece featuring Stoic philosophers. Volume II (1639): Epistolae ad Lucilium & Quaestiones Natu…rales. Volume III (1639): Suasoriae, Controversiae cum Declamationum Excerptis, in the recensión of Andreas Schottus. All three volumes in contemporary vellum bindings, sound and firm. Elzevier typographic device ("Non Solus") on title pages of Volumes II and III. Early manuscript annotations in several hands throughout. Outstanding provenance: each volume bears the engraved armorial bookplate of Petrus Daniel Huetius (Pierre-Daniel Huet, 1630-1721), Bishop of Avranches, one of the most celebrated humanist scholars of 17th-century Europe and a central figure of the Republic of Letters, with inscription recording his donation of his entire library to the Jesuit House of Paris in 1692: "Ex libris Bibliothecae quam Illustrissimus Ecclesiae Princeps D. Petrus Daniel Huetius Episc. Abrincensis Domui Professae Parif. PP. Soc. Jesu integra vivens donavit An. 1692." Additional ownership inscription "D. de R. 1671" in manuscript on Volume III. Red stamp of a conventual library (Burgos, Spain) also present.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger (c4 BC AD 65), usually known mononymously as Seneca, was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman, dramatist, and in one work, satirist, from the post-Augustan age of Latin literature. Justus Lipsius (Joest Lips or Joost Lips; 1547 1606) was a Flemish Catholic philologist, philosopher, and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity. The most famous of these is De Constantia (On Constancy). His form of Stoicism influenced a number of contemporary thinkers, creating the intellectual movement of Neostoicism. He taught at the universities in Jena, Leiden, and Leuven. The Plantin Press at Antwerp was one of the focal centers of the fine printed book in the 16th century. Christophe Plantin (c. 1520-1589) of Touraine was trained as a bookbinder. He fled from Paris where at least one printer had recently been burned at the stake for heresy, and went to Antwerp. By 1555 he began to print books as a profession in Antwerp. Plantin took on an assistant, Jan Moretus (1543-1610), who could read Greek and Latin and could write correspondence in several modern languages. He became Plantin's business manager, son-in-law, and, eventually, his successor in the Plantin printing press. Under Moretus' management, the company focused on 12mo format for text-books, doing away with the smaller handbook (enchiridion), favored under his predecessor.
