Sie ist Religionsphilosophie in dem spezifischen Sinn, der durch die Eigenart einer monotheistischen Offenbarungsreligion gegeben ist. Auf die Autorität der Tatsache gestützt, dass die Begegnung Gottes mit dem jüdischen Volk stattgefunden hat, tritt die Religion als Träger einer unbedingten Wahrheit auf und wird damit für die Philosophie zu einem selbständigen Problem. Diesem besonderen Charakter der jüdischen Philosophie entsprechend stellt Guttmann der Darstellung eine kurze Charakterisierung ihrer biblischen und talmudischen Voraussetzungen voran, ehe er die jüdische Relgionsphilosophie und ihre prägenden Persönlichkeiten im Mittelalter beschreibt. Mit Moses Mendelssohn leitet er in die jüdische Religionsphilosophie der Neuzeit über, die schließlich durch Moritz Lazarus und Hemann Cohen Ende des 19. Jahrhundert ihre Erneuerung findet. Der Schüler von Julius Guttmann, Fritz Bamberger, leitet das erstmals 1933 erschiene Buch mit einem biographischen Vorwort ein. Rechtzeit zum 50 Todestag seines Lehrers erscheint das Werk mit einer substanziellen Weiterführung der philosophischen Strömungen bis zur Gegenwart. Die Autorin des Nachworts. Frankel, one of the eminent rabbinic representatives of German Jewish scholarship, is for many a pioneer for the endeavor to strike a balance between Orthodoxy and classical Reform. This makes him also a founding figure for Conservative Judaism as it later emerged in North America. His concept of a positive-historical Judaism seeks to combine scholarship with piety. The Breslau Jewish Theological Seminary marks the peak of his programmatic influence in the development of modern Jewish denominations. Founded in 1854, it could have celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2014.
