[CIVIL WAR] [MINNESOTA]. First edition, 8vo, pp. [1], 508; frontispiece portrait of Gov. Alexander Ramsey, 5 other portraits, 1 plate showing 3 portraits (including Christopher B. Heffelfinger - see below), 4 plates of monuments, 2 folding maps, and 1 map in the text. For those not acquainted with the Minnesota First, one of the regiment's most famous actions - and indeed, one of the most famous actions of the entire Civil War - "was on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg when Major General Winfield Scott Hancock ordered the 1st Minnesota to charge into a brigade of 1,200 Confederate soldiers. This action blunted the Confederate attack and helped preserve the Union's precarious position on Cemetery Ridge" (Wikipedia). This copy with an important inscription: "James Ford Bell, Jr. from Grandmother Heffelfinger, August 14, 1916." James Ford Bell, Jr. was the eldest son of the founder of General Mills, and what is now the James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota. James, Jr. was known locally as the CEO of Red Owl Food Store chain, and was also a noted conservationist. His "Grandmother Heffelfinger" was the wife of Christopher B. Heffelfinger, one of the authors of this book, who from 1861 through 1864 served in Company D of the famous First Minnesota Infantry Regiment, rising in rank from sergeant to captain shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. After serving the full term of his three-year enlistment, Heffelfinger was mustered out at Fort Snelling in May 1864. After a brief appointment as a relief agent in the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864, he re-enlisted in April 1865 and was appointed a major in the First Minnesota Regiment of Heavy Artillery. Heffelfinger died in 1915 while this book was about to go to press, although he did read through the manuscript and made suggestions "which have been adopted in the text as it now appears." Searles, Taylor, Heffelfinger, and two others (also deceased) were the members of the "Coville Commission" who had charge of the preparation of this history. Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine; cracking in the cloth in the top half of the upper joint; hinges cracked; all else very good and sound.

Previous owner's penciled gift inscription on ffep, a few words underlined in ink on p.441., lightly creased corners of front free end papers through p.5 and p. 395-418, large chip on upper corner of p.7/8, p.7-10 loose at hinge, yet still attached. Very light age staining to endpapers. Otherwise, textblock very clean and tight. Light character soiling to front cover of binding, bumped corners, light fraying to corners, edges, and spine. Front and rear hinge appear to have been reattached and repaired. Binding is tight. 508pp., including Appendices and Index. Size: 8vo - Over 7 3/4" -9 3/4 " Tall. Hardcover.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 22 cm. 508 pages. The First Minnesota Regiment was famous for two reasons: it was the first regiment tendered to help defend the Union (Minnesota Gov. Alexander Ramsay happened to be at the Secretary of War's Office as the Secretary left to see President Lincoln when war broke out) and also because of the extremely important part that the regiment played at the battle of Gettysburg. At a crucial part of the battle General Winfield Scott ordered the First Minnesota to charge a much larger body of Confederates who were threatening to split the Union lines. The charge succeeded in giving Hancock time to fill the gap with other troops, but at tremendous loss to the First Minnesota. Historians generally ascribe to the First the greatest losses of any unit of the army in a single battle. This history is the only one of the many written about this unit which was written by the survivors. This copy is enhanced by the dedication by one of the three authors on the 53rd anniversary of the battle: "July 4,1916 A. A. Bell from Matthew Taylor". According to Brian Leehan's exhaustive study (Pale Horse at Plum Run) of the First Minnesota, Cpl. Mathew Taylor was in Company E, and "Shot through Left Lung" at the battle. The book is generally in very good condition. Both of the inner hinges are tender and the front hinge has been repaired with tape. There are no other major flaws. The fold-out map of the battle scene (as of July 2, 1963) is intact and in perfect shape. An extremely rare book made even more interesting by the signature of one the Regiment's survivors of the battle and who helped write the book. Signed by Author(s).
