The Birth of Epidemiological Mapping in AmericaValentine Seaman's Pioneering 1798 Yellow Fever Maps of New York—Anticipating John Snow by Half a CenturyThe First Six Volumes of America's First Medical Journal, Including Edward Jenner's Instructions for VaccinationAn important early run of the first six volumes of the Medical Repository, the first medical journal published in the United States, containing Valentine Seaman's landmark 1798 epidemiological maps of yellow fever in lower Manhattan, among the earliest published maps to plot individual cases of disease as a means of investigating its causes. Anticipating by more than half a century John Snow's celebrated mapping of London's 1854 cholera outbreak, Seaman's two engraved plans represent a pioneering application of cartography to public health, transforming the maps into instruments of medical investigation. Also present in this set is an important early American printing of Edward Jenner's practical instructions for smallpox vaccination.Established in New York in 1797 by Samuel Latham Mitchill, Elihu Hubbard Smith, and Edward Miller, and printed by T. & J. Swords, the Medical Repository was conceived as a distinctly American forum for the systematic collection and exchange of medical observation. Its unusually broad program sought to investigate the relationship between "Climate, Soil, Temperature, Diet, &c. and Health," with particular attention to the epidemic diseases repeatedly devastating the growing cities of the new republic. The editors, all medical doctors, wrote many of the early articles. There are also contributions by Benjamin Rush, Benjamin S. Barton, James Mease, Joseph Priestley, Samuel Osborn, Alexander Hosack, and Thomas Archer. Dr. Smith, one of the founding editors, was himself a victim of the yellow fever in 1798. The journal, one of the foundational publications of American medicine and science, continued until 1824.The present set comprises the complete First Hexade, Volumes I-VI, covering the journal's first six annual volumes through 1803. Volume I, which contains the Seaman article and maps, is present in the 1804 third edition. Notably, Volume II is present in the first edition (1799). The six principal volumes are uniformly bound in quarter red leather over marbled boards.Valentine Seaman's Yellow Fever Maps: A Landmark in Epidemiology and Thematic CartographyOf exceptional importance is Volume I, containing Valentine Seaman's pioneering paper, "An Inquiry into the Cause of the Prevalence of the Yellow Feve.
