Hundertfünfzig Jahre hat es gedauert, bis die indologische Forschung ein klares Bild der großen indischen Erlösungslehre gewonnen hatte, und für ein…ige Schlüsselbegriffe dauert die Diskussion noch an. Mit ihnen befasst sich das vorliegende Buch. Es ist als ergänzendes Wörterbuch des Pali-Buddhismus gedacht, behandelt aber die Stichworte nicht lexikalisch knapp, sondern in Form von Essays in einiger Breite. Manche dieser Begriffe stehen in mehreren, miteinander verzahnten Sachzusammenhängen und können nicht durch ein einzelnes deutsches Wort übersetzt werden.Die zeitlich nach dem Pali-Buddhismus entstandenen buddhistischen Lehrrichtungen haben viele Begriffe aus dem Pali übernommen und teils weiterentwickelt, teils mit neuem Bedeutungsgehalt erfüllt. Diesen Neuinterpretationen im Sanskrit-Buddhismus widmet sich das Werk ebenfalls. Philosophisch und religionshistorisch ist es fesselnd zu sehen, wie Begriffe und Ideen sich vom Theravada-Buddhismus zum Mahayana entwickeln. Somit ist das Buch auch für Anhänger des Zen bedeutsam.Der Einleitungsteil des Buches schildert, wie die Lehrreden des Buddha kodifiziert und bis in unsere Zeit überliefert wurden. Der Buddha stammte, wie der Pali-Kanon (in M 89,19 und Snip 422 f.) bestätigt, aus dem altindischen Königreich Kosala und sprach Kosali als Muttersprache. Die (leider nicht genau bestimmbaren) Elemente dieser Sprache im Pali-Kanon sind es, die uns berechtigen, im Pali die Sprache des Buddha zu sehen.Über den Autor:H.W. Schumann hat als Indologe mit einer Pali-Arbeit promoviert und 20 Jahre in Indien, Burma (Myanmar) und Ceylon (Sri Lanka) gelebt. Er hat sich 60 Jahre lang begeistert und zustimmend, aber mit wissenschaftlichem Urteil mit der Lehre des Buddha befasst.
