Bei der Herausgabe der vierten Auflage habe ich mich nach langem Zögern entschlossen, den Grundriß etwas eingreifender den inzwischen abgelaufenen Entwicklungen der Psychotherapie und meiner persönlichen Erfahrung anzupassen. Mit Ausnahme einer wesentlichen Vertiefung meiner psychoanalytischen Auffassung, die mir dadurch erwuchs, daß in den letzten 10 Jahren psychoanalytisches Arbeiten den Löwentheil meiner Tätigkeit darstellte und sich die Gelegenheit fand, ausgiebig selbst als Versuchsperson zu dienen, habe ich in prinzipieller Beziehung nicht Veranlassung zu einer Änderung gesehen. Die Darstellung konnte jetzt, wo der psychotherapeutische Gedanke in der ärztlichen Welt viele lebendiger geworden ist, auf vieles Einführende verzichten, so auch auf das Kapitel Heilpädagogik; es konnten jetzt prinzipielle Zusatzkapitel gemacht werden, wie etwas das 2. über Einordnung und Reichweite in der Psychotherapie in der Medizin und das 9. über Neurosenstruktur und Existenzialwerte, und fernr der Versuch gemacht werden, den Material tragenden 3. Teil des Buches im Sinne einer allgemeinbiologischen Neurosentheorie umzugestalten. Auch in den übrigen Teil des Buches ist sehr vielfach nach Möglichkeiten versucht worden, dem jetzigen Stand unseres Gebietes gerecht zu werden. So erscheint der Grundriß hier zum ersten Male in wesentlich veränderter Gestalt, doch hoffe ich, daß er auch so den gewünschten Zweck erfülle, im einzelnen, auch für sich selbstständigen Kapiteln eine faßliche Einführung und Übersicht zu geben. .
