First Edition
First edition of this memoir by an Austrian refugee soon after the Anschluss. Schmidt-Kolmer was born in Vienna in 1913 to a Jewish family. She joined the Austrian Communist Party, and was imprisoned for four months after it was banned in 1933. She fled after the Anschluss, and settled in England until 1946, where she was active in the Austrian refugee organisations. Her book, published pseudonymously to protect her family in Austria, tracks the rise of Nazism in Austria, the policies of the Social Democrats and the Austrian Youth Movement, and the events of the annexation. She asserts that the struggle for freedom and democracy will continue, out of which "a new and victorious Austria will arise". Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, yellow endpapers. With dust jacket. Slight lean to spine and sunning at extremities, minor foxing to contents; unclipped jacket sunned and a little soiled with slight chips at extremities, shadow of sticker on spine panel: a very good copy in good jacket.
