Rechenstunden geschieht allerdings mehr als nur ein Rechnen. Es wird nämlich im ersten Schuljahr auch das erste Material für dieses Rechnen an die Kinder herangebracht, nämlich die positiven ganzen Zahlen, die man oft auch als natürliche Zahlen bezeichnet, und die Null; später kommen als neue Zahlen, mit denen im Anschluß an deren Einführung auch gerechnet wird, z. B. Brüche mit ganzzähligem, positivem Zähler und ebensolchem Nenner hinzu und schließlich noch gewisse Gruppen von Dezimalbrüchen. Mit diesen Zahlen werden dann nicht nur die Operationen der Addition, Subtraktion, Multiplikation und Division, also das eigentliche Rechnen vorgenommen, sondern eine bedeutende Aufgabe des Unterrichtes besteht darin, daß die Kinder auch zu der Einsicht gelangen, warum man diese letzteren Operationen so ausführt, wie man es üblicherweise tut, eine Aufgabe, die auf dem Gebiet der Bruchrechnung in den Fällen der Multiplikation mit einem Bruch und der Division durch einen Bruch an die geistige Einsicht des Lehrers selbst ganz besondere Anforderungen stellt.
