Auf Basis der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden Hypothesen abgeleitet, die einen möglichen Erklärungsansatz für die intensive Nutzung und damit den Erfolg der sozialen Medien, auch im Vergleich zu den traditionellen Medien, bieten. Um zu Beginn das Phänomen der sozialen Medien als Gegenstand dieses Buches zu konkretisieren, werden diese Medienart und ihr Erfolg im ersten Kapitel umfassend dargestellt. Im Folgenden werden die relevanten Aspekte der Motivation eingehend behandelt. Dabei wird zunächst eine psychologische und im Anschluss eine neurowissenschaftliche Perspektive eingenommen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt hierbei auf dem Belohnungssystem als neuronales Korrelat der Motivation. Im Rahmen medienpsychologischer Ausführungen soll im Anschluss die Motivation in Bezug auf die Me-diennutzung, insbesondere der sozialen Medien, genauer untersucht werden. Der Vergleich der Motive für die Nutzung der Massenmedien und der sozialen Medien ist das Ziel dieses Kapitels.
