En su origen, el resentimiento es siempre la expresión de algún sentimiento de impotencia, nacido del choque del sujeto al asu…mir, según las formas de su personalidad, tal o cual valor moral. El sujeto afectado llega entonces, para liberar su vida interior, a negar el valor que él no ha podido realizar. Error, sin duda, pero «aquello que en el hombre lúcido es el resultado de una equivocación consciente, es aquí el solo efecto del automatismo tendencioso de toda su actividad psicológica». Por esta mutación, el hombre resentido llega a poder librarse de la obsesiva experiencia de impotencia. Al desaparecer el deseo del valor codiciado en otro tiempo, desaparece a la vez el sentimiento de la resistencia que nos impedía realizarlo: aumenta por lo tanto el sentimiento de la potencia individual. Potencia completamente ilusoria, pues si el hombre resentido se aferra a unos valores nuevos, no es nunca por su contenido positivo, sino por la medida en que ellos le permiten empequeñecer el antiguo valor que él no ha podido alcanzar. El origen del resentimiento es en la mayor parte de las ocasiones personal; pero es igualmente posible descubrir una especie de resentimiento colectivo. Fue Nietzsche el primero que atrajo la atención de los filósofos sobre el fenómeno del resentimiento: este fenómeno es incluso la clave de su explicación del cristianismo, en particular en la Genealogía de la moral (v.). Como ha sucedido a menudo, Scheler reprocha a Nietzsche desde el principio el no haber visto en el cristianismo más que una moral, lo que le impidió el comprender el hecho esencial, puramente religioso. El centro del cristianismo es, en efecto, el amor. Nietzsche no vio nada más que una máscara de la voluntad de poder de los débiles, que deseaban vengarse de los fuertes. Pero Nietzsche, alimentado por el helenismo, confundió el amor cristiano y el amor pagano, cuando, según Scheler, sus direcciones son radicalmente opuestas. Para los griegos, el amor es una ascensión dialéctica, del inferior hacia el superior: lo imperfecto tiende hacia lo perfecto, lo indefinido hacia lo finito y lo infinito, la apariencia, hacia la esencia. En ningún lugar este carácter es más visible que en Platón. Y ésta es, en verdad, la tendencia más natural del mundo; pero, al haber conocido tan sólo ésta, los griegos llegaron a suponer que sólo el Hombre es el único capaz de amar. Desde el principio, el cristianismo operó una radical inversión de los valores: el amor predicado por Cristo ,es, ante todo, una gracia, es decir, un don gratuito, una efusión descendente, una compasión del Creador hacia la criatura, y, más particularmente, desde el punto de vista moral, de los superiores hacia los inferiores, del rico para con el pobre; del hombre sano hacia el hombre enfermo. Scheler, en una polémica muy viva, muestra la incompatibilidad radical que existe entre el cristianismo y el humanitarismo moderno, este cristianismo sin trascendencia, nacido de la moral burguesa, y que, olvidando el movimiento esencialmente descendente del amor, no puede por menos que desembocar en el resentimiento. Esta concepción puede parecer que separa demasiado el orden de la naturaleza y el orden de la gracia. Pero su exposición, además de su valor puramente psicológico, tiene el de una interpretación sociológica. Al demostrar la divergencia radical entre la verdadera mística cristiana y la mística humanitarista, Scheler abre una franca discusión que plantea el problema de todas las síntesis de política cristiana aparecidas en el transcurso de los últimos años. De otro modo ocurre con este escrito de Scheler, recibido con entusiasmo o su aparición, leído y meditado de continuo por contingentes de especialistas, de curiosos de filosofía, de lectores cultos en general. Esta vez, la ancha puerta del interés público se abrió para el ingreso triunfal de una verdadera obra maestra, porque eso es, ya hay derecho a proclamarlo, este sustancial tratado del hombre. Por razones circunstanciales, el autor condensó en estas páginas las ideas cardinales y los planteos que iba elaborando para una exposición más extensa del asunto, que su muerte prematura dejó en proyecto. Acaso lo más profundo que se ha dicho sobre el hombre se puede leer en este libro, y también lo más alentador.
