Was die Ausgräber, denen wir die wichtigen Funde verdanken, zur Erklärung des zutagegeförderten archäologischen Materials bisher vorgebracht haben, trägt eher den Charakter einer Notauskunft als einer wirklich befriedigenden Deutung des Sinnes und Gebrauchszweckes der Anlage. Die Erfolglosigkeit der Bemühungen der Archäologen um die Erklärung des Rundbaus rührt meines Erachtens daher, daß sie ihn lediglich unter dem Gesichtswinkel eines Elementes innerhalb der architektonischen Gesamtkonzeption des Nordpalastes betrachten und im Wege dieser Betrachtungsweise Schlüsse auf den vom Baumeister des Herodes beabsichtigten praktischen Zweck der Anlage ziehen zu können vermeinen. Es wurde die Frage gar nicht aufgeworfen, ob wir im Rundbau von Masada vielleicht eine architektonische Anlage zu sehen haben, deren Erklärung nicht im begrenzten Rahmen des Planes des Herodes-Palastes allein, sondern auf viel umfassenderer Grundlage der Geschichte der antiken Baukunst gesucht werden muß. XIII 15, 4 (§§ 395-397) gibt Flaviu…s Josephus in einer anscheinend sehr wichtigen Liste einen Überblick über den territorialen Umfang des Hasmonäerstaates in der letzten Zeit des Alexander Jannäus. Bei diesem Überblick zählt er nacheinander das Küstengebiet (pros thalássi), das Binnenland (én déti mesogaía), das jüdische Ostjordanland und schließlich die unterworfenen Moabiterstädte (Moavítidas [sc. póleis]) auf. Diese Liste soll nicht mit äußerster Exaktheit das Staatsgebiet unter Alexander Jannäus bestimmen oder alle eroberten Städte lückenlos aufzählen. Josephus sucht nur den allgemeinen Umfang der Eroberungen des Hasmonäerkönigs in allen Teilen des Landes aufzuzeigen; darum erwähnt er die wichtigsten Städte, die in seine Hand gefallen sind. Die Liste ist geographisch geordnet: die Küstenstädte werden von Norden nach Süden aufgezählt, das Binnenland, d.h. das Innere Westisraels, von Süden nach Norden und das Ostjordanland wieder von Norden nach Süden. Der südlichste von Jannäus eroberte Punkt an der Küste ist Rinokorura ('Rinokóroura, heute el-'arisch), das mit dem Südende des Toten Meeres auf gleicher Höhe liegt. Es erhebt sich nun die Frage: Welches ist die Südgrenze der Eroberung des Jannäus im Binnenland, d.h. in Westisrael und im unterworfenen Moab? Zweifellos birgt die Antwort auf diese Frage der letzte Teil der erwähnten Liste, wo die von Jannäus eroberten Moabiterstädte aufgezählt werden. Um zu befriedigenden Ergebnissen zu gelangen, müssen wir jedoch vorher noch eine andere Stelle in den Antiquitates betrachten. Ich denke an Buch XIV I, 4 (§ 18). Dort wird erzählt, Hyrkanus, der älteste Sohn des Jannäus, habe dem Nabatäerkönig Aretas zugesichert, er werde ihm die zwölf Städte zurückgeben, die sein Vater Jannäus den Nabatäern entrissen hatte, wenn er, Aretas, ihm zum Königsthron verhelfe, der ihm von seinem Bruder Aristobulos weggenommen worden war. - Wikipedia: Abraham Chaim Schalit (geboren 13.
