Quando Satoshi Kamata scrisse questo diario-inchiesta, la Toyota era già il terzo produttore mondiale automobilistico dopo General Motors e Ford e le sue automobili si stavano rapidamente diffondendo anche nel mercato europeo. Pubblicato in Giappone nel 1973 (senza il nome "Toyota" nel titolo, che la direzione dell'impresa era riuscita a fare togliere), il libro venne tradotto dopo tre anni in Francia e da allora conoscerà una grande fortuna editoriale in varie lingue, diventando un classico dell'inchiesta operaia del Novecento. È un testo di denuncia della condizione operaia alla Toyota, dell'alienazione fisico-psichica sofferta dai lavoratori sotto l'imposizione dei ritmi e metodi produttivi della fabbrica e delle strategie occupazionali e gestionali dell'impresa giapponese che vale come riferimento della base su cui saranno successivamente impiantate tutte le tecniche di miglioramento dell'efficienza produttiva per cui il Toyota Production System è famoso.
