Hardcover. Condition: New. In shrinkwrap. Quarto. Hardcover. Black cloth spine with gilt titles over illustrated paper boards. 255 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), portraits; 30 cm. "Sargent and Paris explores the early career of American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), from his arrival in Paris in 1874 as a precocious 18-year-old art student through the mid-1880s, when his infamous portrait Madame X was a scandalous success at the Paris Salon. Over the course of one extraordinary decade, Sargent achieved recognition by creating boldly ambitious portraits and figure paintings that pushed the boundaries of conventionality. Immersed in a cosmopolitan circle of artists, writers, and patrons, Sargent was able to navigate a successful path through the French exhibition system while achieving acclaim and awards. Beyond the portrait studio, he traveled in search of inspiration for his art--finding subjects in Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and North Africa. This exhibition gathers Sargent's diverse works from this period to illuminate his path to becoming an artist, which was indelibly shaped by his experiences in the French capital. These visually stunning works provide a compelling view of the Paris art world of the late 19th century. The iconic Madame X, a beloved highlight of The Met collection, is the culmination of Sargent's early years in Paris. The exhibition will take an in-depth look at this captivating portrait and the numerous preparatory sketches, and it will be displayed alongside select portraits of Parisiennes by Sargent's contemporaries." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.…

Exhibition catalogue. Reprint. 295x235mm 288 pages with index. 171 colour 85 black and white illustrations. Paperback. Near fine. Examines the career of John Singer Sargent, not only focusing upon his achievements as a master portraitist, but also as a painter of landscapes, figures, watercolours and murals. He was a genuinely international figure, forging an early reputation in Paris, and later establishing himself as a portraitist in England and America. He travelled extensively in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, doing research for his Boston mural projects and painting a dazzling range of landscapes and figure studies in oil and watercolour. His huge diversity of output is surveyed and evaluated in this exhibition catalogue, which accompanies the first major retrospective of Sargent's career since the memorial exhibitions that followed his death. Two hundred works are reproduced with substantial entries and each section has a short introduction. Three essays examine Sargent's development as an artist, his relationship with his patrons, and his involvement, over 30 years, with painting murals. We are specialists in Catalogues: Exhibitions, Auctions, Collections, etc., with a picture of the cover available on request. All items are as described and dispatched within 36 hours in a secure package. We are professional booksellers with over 30 years experience and a real-life bookshop. You may order with confidence.…

Ormond, Richard. JOHN SINGER SARGENT: The Charcoal Portraits. 544 pages with 720 color and b&w plates. Folio, cloth. Yale University Press, 2025. A comprehensive catalogue of Sargent's charcoal portraits, capturing high society, professions, and the arts in an era of profound transformation In comparison with his portraits in oil, John Singer Sargent's charcoal portraits are relatively little known. In this authoritative new volume, Richard Ormond documents the nearly 700 drawings that make up this distinct strand of Sargent's oeuvre. These portraits capture the essence of British and American high society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, portraying an elite clientele that includes aristocracy, royalty, politicians, artists, writers, actors, financiers, and philanthropists. Among Sargent's subjects are such prominent figures as the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Du Ponts, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Ethel Barrymore, W. B. Yeats, and Winston Churchill. Though renowned for his paintings of women, these charcoal portraits also reveal Sargent's interest in depicting athletes across a variety of sports, from cricket and fencing to football and polo. This shift in subject matter from prewar to postwar, along with a sparser style characteristic of his charcoal work, casts new light on Sargent's depictions of the period's social landscape. Surviving letters between Sargent and his patrons, reminiscences recorded in contemporary diaries, and David McKibbin's extensive correspondence with sitters, both document the portraits and provide a vivid and human picture of the artist at work.…
