Hardcover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover in slipcase; 392 pages; 312 colour illustrations; 26 x 35.5 cm; 4.1 kg; Limited Edition of 400 numbered copies from I to XX and from 21 to 400.; Following in the tradition of the previous volumes of The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics. A Collector's Vision, the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2016, Global by Design Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection, loans to other temporary exhibitions and conferences based on the collection, this volume is the result of Renato de Albuquerque's quest to continue to share his collection and the research undertaken on it with the wider public. The sixth volume of the RA Collection concludes a series of publications, the first five of which are dedicated to Chinese ceramics and enamelled copper, reflecting the extraordinary collection of works of art assembled by the collector Renato de Albuquerque. This final volume, The RA Collection of Cross-Cultural Works of Art: A Collector's Vision is dedicated to works of art other than porcelain and enamel on copper, which have resulted from the interaction between African, Asian and Western cultures. It includes pieces from ancient Sierra Leone, the Kingdom of Kongo, Sri Lanka, India, China, the Philippines and Japan; these hybrids works of art are of historical significance and were produced during a period when a new common worldwide cultural heritage had emerged. The 57 book entries illustrate and discuss some of the most iconic pieces of Renato Albuquerque's collection of cross-cultural works of art, written by six authors, each covering a particular field of expertise.…

It provides the first comprehensive study of what is probably the world's best private collection of pieces for the European market and contains new research into the subject of Chinese export porcelain and enamelled copper. The three-volume set of hardcover books includes chapters on earthenware, stoneware and porcelain of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, works with Western shapes and decoration and armorial Chinese export porcelain. It gives details of many rare or unique pieces in the RA Collection, which are the only ones of their type yet recorded.; Following the publication in 2011 of Volumes I, II and III of The RA Collection. A Collector's Vision, and the success of the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2016, Global by Design. Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection, showing highlights from the collection, the fourth volume documents the most significant new acquisitions made by the collector after the publication of the first 3 volumes. Bringing together passion and an informed vision, the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, has created one of the most coherent and comprehensive collections of Chinese ceramics made for export markets. Encompassing works from the Tang (618-907) to the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, the collection is central to the understanding and study of Chinese export art. Comprising a selection of 206 pieces or groups of pieces, this boxed, hardcover book brings new research on the intercultural connections that are central to the collection. As with the previous volumes, the fourth book is written by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, one of the world's foremost experts on Chinese export porcelain. Her careful research expounds on the collector's choices and the complex, multi-layered history of Chinese earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. This work supplements what has been described as "the best work yet written on Chinese export porcelain" (The Economist, 2011). The fifth volume of The RA Collection is the first in the series to depart from ceramic to other fields of cross-cultural art, focuses on pieces made of enamelled copper which were produced in parallel with Chinese porcelain during the 18th and early 19th centuries. As its predecessors, this book illustrates highlights from the collection, works of art representative of the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures in the modern era. Each piece has been carefully selected by the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, ensuring that the overall collection can serve as a source for the study and furthering of knowledge in the field. The sixth volume of the RA Collection includes pieces from ancient Sierra Leone, the Kingdom of Kongo, Sri Lanka, India, China, the Philippines and Japan; these hybrids works of art are of historical significance and were produced during a period when a new common worldwide cultural heritage had emerged.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Thirteen volumes (complete), octavo size, approx. 4150 pp. Called "the gay nineties" in America and "the naughty nineties" in Britain, the decade of the 1890s was, in many respects, one in which the Victorian morals and societal codes were loosening with many who, on both sides of the pond, "embraced more freedom, fun, and social permissiveness" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Within the worlds of literature and art, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) and Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) were extremely influential, both with a talent for bringing eroticism into their art and making it - almost - socially acceptable. In addition to their joint collaboration on "Salome" (first published in 1892), they launched this periodical, "The Yellow Book", with its first issue being April, 1894. Beardsley was the first art editor, and while Wilde was not a contributor, his influence can be felt. Ultimately it lasted for only thirteen issues, its demise coming about for almost the same reasons as its success. The public initially saw "The Yellow Book" as "something queer and rather alarming.and thus it almost immediately regarded it as symbolic of new movements." However, after the trial and conviction of Oscar Wilde the publishers, who were from the outset less inclined towards these new ideals than the artists, combined with a reaction, now negative, from the public ("the [publisher's] premises were set upon by a mob who vandalised the building") its final issue was April, 1897 (n.b., quotes from Wiki). ___DESCRIPTION: All volumes bound in full bright yellow cloth, black illustrations and lettering on the fronts, black lettering and decorations on the spines, the table of contents reproduced on the back covers except the final issue which duplicated the design of the front, replete with reproductions of artwork (all in black and white, with a single exception); bindings octavo size (8 1/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination varies between 256 and 406; note that this set does not have the advertisements bound in at the rear. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine, the boards mostly clean (a few volumes with light spots), the corners mostly straight (a few slightly bumped), most without rubbing and a few with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges (we noted a few gutters just beginning to crack), the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; some light rubbing to the black ink on the bindings on most volumes, light toning to some of the endpapers, a few volumes with the boards very slightly bowed, and some of the spines lightly sunned (note that the spine of Vol. VI is significantly lighter in colour). ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set will require additional postage, please inquire for details. International customers, please also note that any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
