Iwan est " tombé inopinément " dans la photographie d'architecture en 2005, le jour où il a proposé à Rem Koolhaas de réaliser une série de clichés suivant une approche documentaire sur un projet de l'agence OMA : la construction de la tour de la télévision centrale chinoise (CCTV), qu'il a associée à celle du Stade olympique national des architectes Herzog & de Meuron, les deux édifices étant à Pékin. Cinq ans seulement après ce premier projet, Iwan collabore avec les principaux architectes du monde, photographiant des oeuvres de Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, Morphosis, Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Zaha Hadid, et de jeunes architectes comme Wang Shu, Sou Fujimoto.
